TUMA recently assisted a train operator in Indonesia with delivering a solution to make the work of servicing the batteries in their trains much easier. After consultation with their maintenance team, we modified the compartment so that the batteries can slide in and out on a moving tray by using TUMA’s heavy duty locking slide that can support up to 250kg. The maintenance team is now able to carry out any necessary repairs in a safe and timely manner. When it’s time to replace the batteries, it is also much easier to lift the batteries out of this sliding tray. These heavy duty locking slides keep those batteries in a steady position despite the vibrations & forces thrown at them from the moving train.railway battery system railway battery box tray railway vehicle battery storage sliding system railway equipment railway parts battery operated train set

How to Release the Battery Burden on Rail Trains?

Replacing the battery in a vehicle like a car is a fairly rudimentary procedure; simply loosen a few bolts and lift out the battery by hand. A car battery typically weighs around 15kg which doesn’t require too much effort to move around. Now consider the procedure for replacing a battery in something as large as a train! A train battery weighs anywhere between 60kg and 120kg, the weight of a person. The effort required to move something that heavy can be back-breaking work. These batteries are subject to regular service and maintenance intervals, so it’s important an effective and efficient system is in place to carry out the work.
TUMA recently assisted a train operator in Indonesia with delivering a solution to make the work of servicing the batteries in their trains much easier. The batteries are installed in the compartment pictured above. However, they were originally bolted in a fixed position that was hard to access and maintenance staff had to endure the difficult task of getting into that compartment to remove the batteries. Quite often that involved crawling into the space which was both awkward and dangerous.
After consultation with their maintenance team, we modified the compartment so that the batteries can slide in and out on a moving tray by using TUMA’s heavy duty locking slide that can support up to 300kg. The maintenance team is now able to carry out any necessary repairs in a safe and timely manner. When it’s time to replace the batteries, it is also much easier to lift the batteries out of this sliding tray. These heavy duty locking slides keep those batteries in a steady position despite the vibrations & forces thrown at them from the moving train. Unfortunately, we were not able to do anything about the weight of the batteries.
The train operator has been trialing this new system on several of their trains. Following a successful test period they are now in the process of rolling out installation of the system across every train in their network.
